Side-By-Side Concerts
Dear Parents and Students,
This is a gentle reminder regarding our side-by-side concerts next week with Williams and Utley Middle Schools. Concert attire is school clothes and casual.
When: Tuesday, February 21st and Thursday, February 23rd
Where: Rockwall HS PAC on the Utley MS campus
What: Rehearsal 4:30pm till 6pm
Food: Pizza at 6pm
Warm-up: 6:30pm
Concert: 7-7:30pm
This event is for the Wind Ensemble only. We will meet at the RHS PAC on the Utley MS campus at 4:30pm, so students will need to arrange for transportation to and from the event. We will not be providing transportation.
Tuesday we will be working with the top band from Williams MS, and Thursday we will be with the top band from Utley MS. A side-by-side concert is a really fun and relaxed performance with high school students helping the middle school bands jump start their concert seasons. We will be learning, rehearsing and performing the middle school band music with the younger students. Parents are welcome to attend. Student attendance is mandatory, so please see me if you have any conflicts.
Thanks,
Mr. K
Huge Success @UIL!!
The Orange Wave Band rolled in with a huge victory this past Saturday at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. We earned:
73 Class One Medals
19 Class Two Medals
83 Ensemble Medals
40 Students Qualify for State (Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest)
Orange Wave Band members earned a total of 175 medals including 47 medals for superior performances by each of our two jazz bands.
According to Mr. McGill who continues to help us out with clarinet lessons and jazz band, it’s our best-ever performance at Solo and Ensemble.
All forty state qualifiers will travel to the UT campus in Austin on May 28th to compete in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest. We are proud of our students. JFND!

Accompanists
Howdy Parents, Students, and Band Boosters,
We have a few things I would like to bring to your attention that are going on with the Orange Wave Band.
1. UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest is this Saturday, February 4th at old Mesquite High School. We will provide bus transportation to and from but you don’t have to use it. This is an all day event and some folks will want to sleep in or leave early after they play. If you choose to provide your own transportation, please fill out and return the attached RISD Alternate Transportation Request. We need to know if you are just leaving early or going and coming with your own transportation. These are due Thursday.
The schedule will be sent home as soon as we receive it. Expect it tomorrow. Parents are welcome to attend. You may even come into the judge’s room to listen, if your kids will let you. Students will need a little money for snacks/lunch if they stay at the school all day. Concessions are provided at Mesquite High School.
2. Pay your accompanist. If you (or your student) are playing an accompanied solo, UIL requires the performance be accompanied. As in past years, students are responsible for the $40 accompanist fee. For the low price of $40, students receive several rehearsals with a very professional piano accompanist and the opportunity of the performance of a lifetime on Saturday. If a student becomes ineligible and is unable to attend, but has practiced with the accompanist once or twice, the payment is only $10. Please make your payment directly to the accompanist. Our accompanists this year are:
Ken Frerichs
Glynda King
Laura Maxwell
David Bush
Charlsey Griffiths
Jim Carmichael
3. Spring trip payments are due Wednesday. The travel company is spending money for buses, hotel rooms, tickets, etc . . . so we need your payment if you haven’t paid yet. Remember spring trip is only a month away. Eligibility requirements apply. Students need to be passing in order to go on the trip. Luckily for some we have another grading period for some to regain eligibility. Remember, to be eligible, students have to pass all of their regular classes with a 70 or above. Any students with an average of less than 70 in an AP or pre AP course will need to obtain a waiver signed by both Dr.
Crump and the teacher.
4. The Band Booster meeting is this Thursday night, February 2nd at 7:00 PM. It’s the happening place to be, right here in the RHS Band Hall. Don’t miss it.
Thanks,
Chris Kosterman

Orange Wave All-Region Band Schedule
This is the big week for our Region 3 All Region Band Clinic and Concert. Please click on the attached All Region Schedule. This year Mesquite ISD will be hosting the event, and it is going to be held on four different campuses. We will be providing transportation to and from each location on both Thursday and Friday, January 19th and 20th.
Students will get out of class on Thursday at the beginning of 7th period. We will travel to Mesquite and have plenty of time to stop for fast food. Students will need money for dinner, then we will drop off students at each site. We will pick up students at the end of rehearsals Thursday and be back at RHS by 10:00PM.
Friday morning we will leave RHS by 8:00AM and deliver to each site. We will pick up students for lunch and return them to each site for the afternoon rehearsals. Students will need money for lunch on Friday. Following rehearsals on Friday, we will bus all the students to the concert site, John Horn High School, and serve students a box meal for dinner before the concerts begin.
Parents, family and friends are all invited to attend. These are truly all-star bands and we should all come out to support the kids who have earned a chair in the groups. Students who wish to use alternate transportation to rehearsals and the concert on either Thursday and/or Friday need to fill out and return an alternate transportation request. Forms are available on the website and hard copies will be available in class.
Concert attire is required for each student for the concerts. Students must bring concert attire (tux for boys and long concert dress for girls) on Friday morning since there will not be enough time for students to return to RHS after rehearsals and before the concert. We will return to RHS by 10:45PM on Friday night.
